After all his hard work at the Under 21 World Sailing Championships in Germany, we managed to get a quick update from Harry as he makes his way to the Under 21 European Championships in Split, Croatia:
“The competition in Germany went really well over the first four days. I managed to climb up to 21st position on the leader board and was nicely set up to achieve my goal of being in the top 12.
The light wind on the last couple of days proved very difficult. In the last race, I had an unfortunate start with my boat going over the start line too early. This resulted in disqualification with lots of points on my card. Cancellation of the final race due to no wind meant I didn’t get a chance to improve my position.
Onwards and upwards. The Under 21 European Championships start next week in Split in Croatia, so I’m really looking forward to that.
I’m also thrilled that our UK team did so well in Rio. Giles Scott was amazing to watch - to win gold in the Finn class before the final race was an amazing achievement. And windsurfer, Nick Dempsey managed to secure a fantastic silver medal.
An unfortunate race for Nick Thompson meant he had a difficult job to achieve the bronze medal in the Men’s final laser race which he wasn’t able to pull it off – he came in sixth.”
The team at Highlight are watching Harry’s progress along with his Rio colleagues with great interest. Whilst not in the same league, the Highlight team is taking to the choppy waters of the Solent in September as part of the Silicon Cup Yacht Race and are keen for any tips and advice.
Antony Bream, MD of Highlight says, “As a bunch of really keen ‘amateur’ sailors, we’re thrilled to be sponsoring both Harry and three yachts in the Silicon Cup. Sailing and our business are really entwined in the way we think - you need to plan to expect the unexpected and even if you think your systems are running OK, a combination of unforeseen events can lead to serious outcomes. Having as much visibility of these as soon as possible can help you to both identify what has gone wrong and then to react quickly to get things right.
“And I know it’s all about the taking part, but the competitive spirit is very catching - we really want to improve on our 3rd position achieved last year!”
The Silicon Cup, taking place on 14th & 15th September, will pitch Highlight’s three crews against over 250 sailors on 20 vessels. For more info, visit http://www.britanniaevents.co.uk/industry-regattas/emc-silicon-cup/
